Marie, art director at The Red Edition creation studio thus explains the popularity of cane furniture. Caning is trendy, she says, because there is a desire to find natural and living materials, in relation to the trend of wellbeing and better living in the city. There is a definite revival of materials that inspire a quality art of living and working with natural materials such as caning, straw weaving, braiding, working beautiful wools is part of French heritage. In reaction to synthetic materials and products without character, there is consumer desire to reconnect with beautiful, organic, living materials which breathe and to reconnect with the beauty of materials evolving over time, to form a patina. The tactile aspect of cane and its refined appearance also attract consumers looking for elegant comfort and safe values.

Indeed, in interior design natural and vegetal matters have made a big comeback in France, as recently cane designs used in bedheads, sofas and chairs. Their beauty and quality lie mostly in the weaving technique done using rattan cane, name of Filipino origin of a plant known for its flexibility and great strength, processed and cut into thin strips and then braided to reveal different patterns.

Its story began at the end of the 17th century when the English and the Dutch began to import rattan from Asia, where they had their trading posts. Combining comfort and robustness, caning seduced the French with its exoticism and experienced success from the Regency (1715-1723) to Louis XV. It dressed sofas, armchairs, headboards or chairs and was later modernized, especially at the start of the 20th century.

Caned seat chair n°14 called « chaise bistrot ».

In 1859, Michael Thonet created the caned seat chair n°14 called « chaise bistrot » which will become not only a pioneer but an icon of industrial furniture design.

Other mythical models will follow, such as the Cesca B32 chair by Marcel Breuer (1928) or the Rio table by Charlotte Perriand (1962).

This ancestral know-how is currently revisited with additional color, originality or lightness to it, as we see in The Red Edition creation studio’s Cannage Sofa, a contemporary piece in its volumes and design.

Canape n. 210 by The Red Edition

This post has been written from the content of a French blog.
